The Battle of Kulikovo. Modern Museum and the History of the XIV Century

If you want to see modern museum, dedicated to Russian history, it is not necessary to go to Moscow or St. Petersburg, pay attention to the Battle of Kulikovo and area connected with it.

The fight was between united Russian forces under Dmitry Donskoy and the army of the Golden Horde under Mamay in 1380. Victory of Russians became one of the most important moments in struggling against the Mongolian yoke. 

Today there are lots research about the Battle of Kulikovo. The first person who understood importance of saving memory about those events for Russian history was philanthropist, manufacturer, diplomatist Yury Nechaev-Maltsov. He opened the first museum in his own house in Polibino. After the Revolution in 1917, it became the basic of the state museum.
By the way, Yury Nechaev-Maltsov was also a founder of Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. He gave most of the money for its building.

Pushkin’s museum of fine arts remains important cultural symbol of Russia. Kulikovo area today is the place that becomes famous in other countries. Now it is modern museum complex with interactive exposition. You can touch many objects, listen to audios, watching films and even play. The exposition is great for family visit. It will be exiting experience for children and adults.

Area of the Battle of Kulikovo now includes three locations.

Approaching the museum, you can think that it is in the huge hill. The architecture of this building can seem extraordinary. At the top of the hill there is observation deck.

The second place that you can visit is the territory around the monument that was dedicated to the battle. Not far from it you will see the last church, that was built before the Revolution. The first museum with objects from Polibino was there.

The third place is Monastirschino village. There are renovated church and alley of glory, where memorials telling about warriors of the Battle of Kulikovo are situated. In the end of the alley the monument of Dmitry Donskoy is. You can also see the greatest place of two rivers (Don and Nepriadva) confluence. According to the legend, Russian warriors crossed here before the battle.

Today on Kulikovo area there is everything for comfortable trip. You can leave in small houses, walk and explore Russian history and nature.

In my childhood I lived not far from this place. In that time it was not like that. Visiting the area of the Battle of Kulikovo I feel proud. A lot of tourists go to this place and such a trip is really worth it.
