Moscow GUM |
Being in Moscow every tourist certainly visits the Red
Square and GUM (Main Universal Store). It attracts Russians and foreigners because of not only the
opportunity to do great shopping but also its architecture.
There were trading rows on this place during several
centuries. By 1888, previous building became so decrepit that it was decided to
build a new one – modern and spacious. Alexander Pomerantsev won the architectural
competition and in 1890 the building according to his project began. Other
specialists also took part in this work. One of them was engineer and architect
Vladimir Shuhov.
The state department store was built in pseudo-Russian
style and richly decorated. Today it is one of the symbols of the Russian
capital.

But there is another building that reminds GUM by its exterior
decoration. It is Dmitry Solunsky Church situated in Beresovka village, Lipetsk
region. Philanthropist Yury Nechaev-Maltsov gave money for its building. He
invited Alexander Pomerantsev and Vladimir Shuhov to construct it. Work lasted
onle four years (!) from 1893 until 1897. The church was built in honor of the Battle of Kulikovo soldiers.
In 1922 church utensils were confiscated and in 1933
it was closed. In 1960s, officials decided to turn the church building into
Soviet club. It was common in USSR. In that time bell tower, mosaic and
iconostasis were destroyed.
Renovation of Dmitry Solunsky Church began in 2000s. It
is progressing rather slowly. In any case, you can see church exterior.
