Yasnaya Polyana is the main homestead of outstanding Russian writer and philosopher Leo Tolstoy. It is situated in 12 kilometers from Tula. Leo Tolstoy was born here and in 82 years buried not far from his house.
Here Leo Tolstoy wrote his masterpieces "Peace and War" and "Anna Karenina", that made him one of the most famous authors in world literature. Here his children were born. This place had been the source of inspiration for him for many years. In winter he and his family lived in their house in Moscow, but in summer he was in Yasnaya Polyana.

Every day he got up early in the morning, did physical jerks, walking and after that wrote. Sometimes he worked in fields with his peasants. He did a lot for them, trying to do their lives better.
Yasnaya Polyana is really big. A lot of stories are connected with this places. One of them is about Green Stick. Being a child Leo Tolstoy dreamed to find it because it could make all wishes of its owner come true. As we know he didn't find it. So you can take a chance.
Except the main house there are a lot of different buildings that you can visit.

You can take part in excursions or wander by yourself. There are several ponds and many alleys, that Leo Tolstoy so loved. In one of them he was buried. His grave looks like green mound and grass grows on it.
Sometimes different festivals are organised in Yasnaya Polyana. So you can plan your visit in order to learn more not only about Leo Tolstoy but also about Russian culture.
