What to See in Hanover in One Day?

New City Hall, Hanover, Germany
Hanover is the capital and the largest city of Lower Saxony in Germany. From this city my summer trip began. Because of world famous Hannover industrial fairs the city is considered as industrial. But there are a lot of places of interest and you will be in hurry like I was when you have only one day for visiting Hanover.

Hanover was seriously damaged durind World War II, but many old buildings were reconstructed. Now the city with more than 500 thousands citizens looks eclectic and at the same time very cosy.
When you have lack of time just go along the Red Thread. You will see the red line on a pavement. It is the route through the city center with all the most popular sights. It starts not far from the main railway station.
Hanover is really old city. It was first mentioned in 1150.

There are two city halls in Hanover - old and new. Old city hall is the oldest civil building in Hanover. It was built like we now can it see in XV century. It is the example of German brick gothic. Made of red bricks it looks really colourful.
But look at the new city hall. It looks like a palace. This city hall was built in the beginning of XX century. You can look at the building outside and you can go inside. There are a lot of interesting points in it. Unfortunately when I was in Hannover most of them were closed for visitors. But I saw the main hall of the building.

One of the symbols of Hanover is Aegidien Church (Aegidienkirche). It was built in XIV century. The destruction if the church took place during the World War II in 1943. It was decided not to reconstruct it. Now it is war memorial.
There is a bell from Hiroshima. People can hear this bell only one day a year - on August 6th on Hiroshima Day.
Real inspiration for me in Hanover were "post-and-beam" constructions (timber framing) so called "Holzfachwerk". The buildings are made of wood and very often clay-based mixtures. These buildings were  popular in Europe centuries ago. But now we can still find them in different cities and towns.

Other places of interest in Hanover are connected with famous mathenatician and philosoph Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. There is the monument dedicated to Leibniz. And tourists can see the house in which the mathematician lived about 20 years.

Walking along Hanover streets you can find a lot of interesting. For example, medieval gate and not far from this gate Nanas - colourful sculptures which decorate the city. It is difficult to say what the artist meant. Probably it is only original decoration.

I was also inspired by the business center building that is not far fron the new city hall. The construction made of glass, surrounded by water looks stunningly.

Of course there are a lot of hotels, cafes and shops in Hanover. You can find varied cuisine in the city center. And there are a lot of locations for photosessions.

Preparing for my trip I read in Internet that Hanover is the city without its own face. I can't agree with this. For me Hanover is amazing city. And I regret that I had only one day for visiting it.

And one more interesting fact in the end. The first Russian emperor Peter the Great visited Hanover and probably it was the city where he began thinking about further connection with Europe.
