Bonn – Ex-capital of West Germany

Bonn, Germany
When you say "Capital" you imagine, I think, a large city with varied architecture, lifestyles and so on. When you are in Bonn, it is really difficult to believe that this town could be the capital of West Germany. Now it looks like a province and not like a capital. But Bonn deserves tourists' attention in any case.

In Bonn I understood that I schould better plan my trips. Unfortunately there was great reconstruction in the city center. So I couldn't fully enjoy the architecture. Bonn minster, Pepppelsdorf palace, Bonn university were under reconstruction.

Bonn minster is a catholic church in the city center. It looks really magnificent. On each website with a list of Bonn places of interest it is written that you must go inside Bonn minster, but because of the reconstruction, I had no opportunity for doing this.

Pepppelsdorf is a baroque palace. And it was also under the reconstruction during my visit. It was seriously damaged during the World War II and was rebuilt in a simplified form. There is botanical garden near Peppelsdorf. There you can find for example water lillies.

Now Peppelsdorf palace is the part of Bonn university. By the way  many old buildings (places of interest now) belong to Bonn university.

The university was founded in XVIII century. Philosoph Friedrich Nietzsche, poet Heinrich Heine, philosoph Karl Marx studied there during some time.

Now Bonn is famous as the town of Ludwig van Beethoven. Famous composer was born in Bonn in 1770. Now tourists can visit Beethoven's house.

Moreover in the center there are a lot of varios monuments to Beethoven.

The main monument, I think, is near the post office.

One of the most charming buildings in Bonn for me is the city hall.

Like in other German cities in the west of country there are a lot of cafes and restorants in the city center. Also tourists will find many shops. But everything is not so glamorous like in neighboring Dusseldorf. But there are many cute streets for wandering.

There you can also walk along the Rhine embankment. But there is hardly anything interesting in this walk.

Bonn seemed to me a liitle bit drowsy, but it was really exciting to visit ex-capital of Germany.
