The Zwinger as we can see it today was built during the reign of Augustus the Strong. They say that the idea of establishing so luxurious complex was inspired by French Versailles.
The Zwinger is a quadrangle formed by four magnificent buildings. Three of them were built before 1732. The fourth building took its place much later - in 1855. Three baroque parts were created by the achitect Matthäus Pöppelmann and the forth - by Gotfrid Semper.

In general the word "Zwinger" means the part of the fortress between its outer and inner walls. This was in Middle Ages. The Zwinger in Dresden has nothing in common with medieval construction. It was used only for various entertainment.

Buildings of the complex are reachly decorated with sculptures and fountains. One of the most important sculptures is Hercules holding the globe. It is known that Augustus the Strong liked this hero and the image of Hercules adorned the plafond of his ceremonial apartments in the castle-residence.

One of the most loved by citizens and tourists parts of the Zwinger is the pavilion with the clock, that has porcelain bells. Their ringing makes tourists and also citizens freeze from the admiration.

The Zwinger was seriously damaged several times. During the Second World War it was destroyed by aircraft. The reconstruction was finished to 1964. Soviet Union soldiers took part in the Zwinger bomb clearance. On one of the Zwinger walls you can find the inscription dedicated to the Zwinger bomb checking.

Today the Zwinger is one of the most attractive places for tourists in Dresden. It is also loved by citizens as a great place for relax.
