On November 4 in Russia National Unity Day is celebrated. Four centuries
ago in 1612 civil uprising under Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the army
of Poland and Lithuania.
Walking on the Red Square in Moscow you will see the monument dedicated to Kuzma
Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky. In was created in 1818. Ivan Martos, the architect,
made the project for it. Two sons of Martos became the models for the
sculptures.
The monument in whole was created in classicism style. The figures in some angles remain Greek sculptures. But there are no doubts that Martos shows Russian people because of their clothes and appearance.

Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky monument is one of the first large monuments
in Russia. Moreover, people from different part of Russia sent money for its
creation.
Initially, it was planned to locate the monument in Nizhny Novgorod,
where the civil uprising was gathered. Later it was decided to locate it on the
Red Square, in the heart of Moscow and Russia, because Minin and Pozharsky feat
is so important for all country. By the way, for Nizhny Novgorod another
monument was made.
Today Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky monument is the symbol of Russian
unity. While looking at it, the feeling of confidence and pride for Russia
arises in people’s hearts.
